People often joke after receiving a veterinary invoice that "Too bad there isn't a Medical Plan for pets". Well, there is. Historically animal medical insurance has been a controversial subject, but now there are several reputable private companies providing good policies.

As always, researching the policy/company including the fine print is a good idea prior to committing to one. Important points to consider are:

1. Does the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association recognize the plan?

2. Coverage: what is the pet covered for? Accidents? Emergencies? Routine preventative treatments?

3. Monthly costs.

4. Deductible: some plans require a deductible where others don't.

5. Co-Insurance: do you have to pay a percentage of the total claim or does the insurer cover 100%?

The best time to start animal health insurance is when your pet is young and healthy because some insurance policies may not cover existing medical conditions. In general, the clients that we have seen who have enrolled in pet health insurance have overall satisfaction with the service and policies of these reputable companies.
