Does your dog always seem to be shaking his head, scratching its ears, rubbing its ears on the carpet or whining and crying? If so, he may be suffering from an ear infection.
Otoscopic examination plus microscopy using special oil and staining techniques can help differentiate between some of the more common causes such as yeast infections, bacterial infections, parasites like mites, foreign bodies such as grass, and tumors. Dogs with floppy ears or hairy ear canals or dogs that swim alot are susceptible to these conditions, although dogs with erect ears are not immune either.
Treatment is aimed at eradicating these infections and can include ear medication or sometimes in stubborn cases oral antibiotics may be necessary.
