The joy of getting a new furry family member can feel like Christmas Day. But in the excitement of it all, it’s important to add getting them vaccinated to the top of your To Do List. Vaccines help protect your puppy from contracting and spreading harmful diseases that may be life threatening if not prevented. When should I vaccinate my puppy?
Puppies should get their first vaccines when they are 7-8 weeks old. Afterwards, they will need 2 sets of boosters at 12 weeks old and 16 weeks old. Until 10 days after their last booster they are not considered protected, so they should be kept away from other dogs until then. The exception to this rule is if you know the other dog is fully vaccinated; this way you can socialize your puppy with other dogs safely. After that, they should come back in for boosters every 1-3 years (depending on the vaccine). Which vaccines they get are dependent on their lifestyle and health needs, so talk to your veterinarian about what they recommend.
